Galveston Island – Just an hour south of Houston, Galveston Island is a popular beach destination with 32 miles of coastline. There’s also plenty to do off the beach, including visiting the historic Strand District, taking a ride on the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, and exploring the Moody Gardens.
Brazos Bend State Park – Brazos Bend State Park is a 4,897-acre nature preserve located about an hour southwest of Houston. The park is home to several lakes and hiking and biking trails and is an excellent place for birdwatching.
San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site – This state park commemorates the Battle of San Jacinto, which was fought in 1836 and resulted in Texas’ independence from Mexico. The park includes a museum with artifacts from the battle and a replica of the battleship USS Texas.
Big Bend National Park – Located in far West Texas, Big Bend National Park is one of the largest national parks in the United States. The park spans over 800,000 acres and includes mountains, canyons, rivers, and desert terrain.
There are plenty of hiking trails near Houston to explore! Here are a few of our favorites:
1. Memorial Park: This park is located in the heart of Houston and offers over 3,000 acres of space to enjoy. Numerous hiking trails make it an excellent option for both beginner and experienced hikers.
2. Armand Bayou Nature Center: This nature center is located just outside of Houston and is home to over 2,500 acres of wetland habitats. There are several hiking trails throughout the nature center, each offering a unique experience.
3. Huntsville State Park: This park is located about an hour north of Houston and offers over 10 miles of hiking trails. The park also has a lake, making it a great place to cool off after a long hike.
